Independent Film (On The Job By Erik Matti)

We were also asked by our professor in Art Appreciation to watch at least one indie movie and compare it with one Metro Manila Film Festival entry. I chose to watch On The Job by Erik Matti because I love thriller movies.
This  is just a common police vs. bad guys movie that also shows how rampant the politicians abused their power. They used a convicted man to kill some of their political rivals.
Common independent movies are being starred by a not so famous actor/actress, but this independent movie's main cast are one of the most famous actors in the Philippines.
For an independent film, the effects are really good. I think this movie has a higher budget compared to other independent movies. The lightnings are not that dark. It has clearer audio. The camera is not that shaky.
All in all this indie film provided a great quality not just in audio and visual effects but also in terms of the story line.

MMFF PAGPAG

Before we had our Christmas Break, our professor in Art Appreciation told us that we must watch at least one entry of MMFF and make a critique about it.
On December 27, 2013 me and my sister watched PAGPAG(Siyam na Buhay). The theme of the movie is about the superstitious belief of the Filipino that one should not go home directly after going to a wake for you might be trailed by the spirit of the dead.
At first I thought that i will not enjoy the movie because I am not really fan of a horror movie nor "KathNiel" Love Team. Why would i spent money just to scare myself and might not able to sleep at night? LOL. But my sister insisted to watch the movie since she's a die hard fan of the two.
As I expected, every time Kathrine Bernardo and Daniel Padilla have their sweet moment, all the audience kept on shouting "YIEEEE!". There was one instance a man shouted "Hoy horror movie to hindi Got To Believe!"  and then everybody laughed.
Watching the movie was great. It was more of a fun than scary. There were also comedy part in the movie that made me laugh especially when the part that Janus got drunk and scared Kathrine in the morgue. The characters in the movie really made the story more interesting. They all contributed to the success of this movie.
In terms of the effects, the artists made it so      realistic. The makeup of Paulo Avelino       really scared the audience. The sound effects   were so effective. The scary parts were so unpredictable that would really make you scream when it comes. The twists also made the movie a must watch. The focusing and transitioning were also the best. No dull moments in the movie. All the scenes were eye catching. It is like when you blink, you will miss a very important part in the movie. The director of this movie should be given the credit because it was a job well done.
I expect to watch a great movie like this on the next Metro Manila Film Festival.

Group Work (Self Portrait)

The group decided to display our gallery in the Centennial Garden so that many students can see our self portraits and make a critique on it.

ESSAY 2 - Crown Dolot: After Truth (2012)

As we visit to Pamanang Bedista last December 12, 2013 we were asked by our professor in Art Appreciation (Humanities) to choose a piece of artwork that we like the most and have a blog about it.

This artwork is called "After Truth" by Crown Dolot made with acrylic on canvas. Crown Dolot is a graduate of Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines. Crown sustains parallel practice in visual arts and photography. In 2005, she was the country’s representative in the Asia Europe Forum for Young Photographers. She was a member of Concerned Artists of the Philippines where she exhibited solo and collaborative works focused on advocacy in the visual arts. She has taught painting, drawing and photography at Kalayaan College and Young Artists’ Studio (YAS), an art school providing formal art mentoring to aspiring artists. Crown co-founded YAS as response to the need for socially informed art education in the country.

This artwork is the perfect representation of the quote:"Mental fight means thinking against the current, not with it. It is our business to puncture gas bags and discover the seeds of truth." - Virginia Woolf

The art shows a boy tipping his toe or showing a dance step and wearing a colorful outfit. Around him are three figures; a cross, spoon and a coat of arm that symbolizes integrity. The background looks mysterious. It  is divided into two. The top part has a gold yellow color and the bottom part has dirty white color.

For me, this artwork shows that we must not be contented with what the world teaches us. We must search for something to discover the truth.

ESSAY 1 - Bruegel, Pieter: The Fall Of The Rebel Angels (1562)

This work is entitled The Fall of the Rebel Angels. It is made with oil-on-panel by Flemish renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel on 1562. Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c1525-1569) is one of the world's most postered painters. Hunters in the Snow, The Peasant Wedding, The Fall of Icarus or The Tower of Babel are stuck to walls everywhere. The Netherlandish artist's work has become part of our visual vocabulary – quotable, proverbial, almost anonymous. Bruegel comes across as an inherently democratic painter, part of popular, not elite, culture. He embraces all of life, effortlessly combining comic and tragic. He's a crowd pleaser and his art delights in teeming crowds.

The passage from Book of Revelation (12:7-9) “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels waged war upon the dragon” is being illustrated by this artwork.

At the top of the painting there is a light that symbolizes heaven and at the bottom part is filled with signs of darkness. The archangel Michael,  with a golden armor and armed with his shield and sword, is positioned in the center of the image. St Michael is shown suppressing the seven-headed dragon of the apocalypse, known otherwise as Satan. Under St. Michael are the falling rebel angels screaming as they fall further from the heavens. They transformed from angel into creatures with body parts taken from humans, sea animals, reptiles, toads, plants and even musical instruments. The rebel angels look so chaotic at the bottom part of the artwork. The archangels at the top, by contrast, look weightless. Their bodies are elegant and refined, floating above the chaos. Floating above, in the clear and open blue sky, they appear embodied in a state of grace. The spaces at the top shows the freedom of the good angels compared to the crowded situation of the rebel angels at the bottom.

For me, the art is very meaningful. The rebel angels can also be compared to the current situation of the world where there are more people being challenged by their faith. While the good angels can be compared to those who are faithful to God.
