ESSAY 2 - Crown Dolot: After Truth (2012)

As we visit to Pamanang Bedista last December 12, 2013 we were asked by our professor in Art Appreciation (Humanities) to choose a piece of artwork that we like the most and have a blog about it.

This artwork is called "After Truth" by Crown Dolot made with acrylic on canvas. Crown Dolot is a graduate of Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines. Crown sustains parallel practice in visual arts and photography. In 2005, she was the country’s representative in the Asia Europe Forum for Young Photographers. She was a member of Concerned Artists of the Philippines where she exhibited solo and collaborative works focused on advocacy in the visual arts. She has taught painting, drawing and photography at Kalayaan College and Young Artists’ Studio (YAS), an art school providing formal art mentoring to aspiring artists. Crown co-founded YAS as response to the need for socially informed art education in the country.

This artwork is the perfect representation of the quote:"Mental fight means thinking against the current, not with it. It is our business to puncture gas bags and discover the seeds of truth." - Virginia Woolf

The art shows a boy tipping his toe or showing a dance step and wearing a colorful outfit. Around him are three figures; a cross, spoon and a coat of arm that symbolizes integrity. The background looks mysterious. It  is divided into two. The top part has a gold yellow color and the bottom part has dirty white color.

For me, this artwork shows that we must not be contented with what the world teaches us. We must search for something to discover the truth.
